Top 10 Most Expensive Mobile Phones in the World

Until recently, the vast majority of mobiles had been priced between £100 and £300, with only Vertu, a division of Nokia, manufacturing uber-premium phones. With prices starting at around £4,000 Vertu phones are only for the filthy rich, and the super famous

1. Goldvish “Le million” = $1,000,000 (£540,540)

A PR stunt it may be, and they surely can’t be expecting to sell any, but the Goldvish “Le million” is officially the most expensive mobile phone in the world, according the Guiness Books of Records. There’s even been talk of a $1.3million phone, but this has fewer diamonds than the Goldvish so I can’t see where the extra expense comes from! The “Le million” is a one off, featuring a blinding 120 carats worth of VVS-1 grade diamonds, according to designer Emmanuel Gueit. If $1 million is out of your price range. the Geneva-based Goldvish also offer several other diamond-encrusted 18k gold models in your choice of rose, yellow, or white, starting at a much more reasonable $25,600 (£13,837).

However, Vertu’s monopoly of the luxury phone market is coming to an end with the launch of several new luxury mobile makers, including Gresso, Mobiado and GoldVish. Other mobile phone manufacturers are also partnering with luxury brands to produce a range of premium mobile phones, such as LG and Prada, D&G and Motorola, and now Tag Heuer and Modelabs. Finally, there are the ridiculous, super-expensive one-offs, made purely for headline grabbing, such as Goldvish’s “Le million”, worth a cool $1,000,000, see below for details!

2. Vertu Signature Cobra = $310,000 (£167,567)

Vertu is now taking orders for the Signature Cobra, designed by French jeweler Boucheron, but you had better be quick as only 8 are being made! The Cobra will feature one pear-cut diamond, one round white diamond, two emerald eyes and 439 rubies. Vertu will also be offering a “cheaper” version, ruby free, at $115,000 (£62,162).

3. Sony Ericsson Black Diamond = $300,000 (£162,162)

Apparently the Black Diamond will be available in 2007, not from Sony Ericsson but by a company called VIPN. Initially only 5 unique numered pieces will be available for the unbelievable price of, wait for it… $300,000.
With regards to the specifications, don’t expect anything remarkable for your money. It will have Quad-band with Wi-Fi, an Intel 400Mhz processor running windows mobile 5, and a touch sensitive 2″ screen. It will also include internal memory of 128mb and will come with a 2Gb SD card for external storage, plus a respectable 4 Megapixel camera.
The designer Jaren Goh has used some pretty impressive materials for the build, featuring titane with polycarbonate, mirror-finish cladding and diamonds.

4. Vertu Diamond = $88,000 (£47,567)

The Diamond is Vertu’s premium range of high-end mobile phones. As the name suggests the handsets in the Diamond range are diamond-encrusted handsets made from platinum. Only 200 of the handsets are being produced, the most expensive believed to be worth an estimated £50,000.

5. Motorola V220 Special Edition = £28,000 ($51,800)

Austrian designer Peter Aloisson, has taken a standard Motorola, studded it with 1,200 diamonds and added a keyboard inlaid with 18 carat gold. The outcome is a £28,000 handset, suitable only for footballers and film stars!

6. Gold Edition Nokia 8800 Phone = $2,700 (£1,459)

If you have $2,700 to spare, you can now buy the Nokia 8800 in 24K gold. However, be warned, if you think you’ll be getting a better phone for your extra cash, you wont! The features found on the Gold Edition are the standard 8800 features, which are pretty basic. It includes a 0.5 Mega pixel SVGA camera, 64 MB of internal memory, 64 voice polyphonic rigntones, FM Radio, Mp3 Player, video recording and 180 mins talktime. However, the Gold Edition does includes a special edition box and charging dock!

7. Mobiado Professional EM (wood) = $1,900 (£1,027)

The Mobiado Professional EM, is a wood-clad upgrade of their earlier Nokia-based phone that includes a 1.3 megapixel camera, music player, FM radio, Bluetooth, and according to Mobiado it’s the first production phone with Titanium buttons. Only 200 are being made and each one has its limited number engraved on the back. At $1,900 however, you’re still paying an awfully high premium for a fairly basic phone encased in wood!

8. Bang & Olufsen (Samsung) Serene = $1,250 (£675)

Bang & Olufsen hooked up with Samsung to design the sleek but unconventional Serene. Its not a bad looking phone and it even has a built-in motor to assist you in opening and closing the phone. It’s not very practical however, requiring a special screwdriver to access the battery and the SIM card, and its circular keypad will take some getting used to. Also, for some strange reason they have positioned the camera lens on the side of the device, which will make it difficult to align snapshots via the viewfinder on the display.

9. Lamborghini 8800 Sirocco from Nokia = $To be announced

The Lamborghini Nokia 8800 Sirocco is another special edition, like the previously launch Aston Martin branded Sirocco. It will ultimately be a standard 8800 Sirocco but with the addition of the famous Lamborghini logo engraved on the font and the back, plus ball bearings from the auto company to in the slider phone mechanism. The Lamborghini phone will be a limited edition with only 500 being made. It will also feature Lamborghini graphics as wallpapers, screensavers, ringtones, and even has a short documentary video about the Lamborghini.

10. Gresso Luxury Phone = £expensive

The Russia based Gresso, is a new entry into the luxury phone market. Their aptly name “Gresso Luxury Phone” is made of gold and African Blackwood. Apparently they will be releasing a collection of five models called the Black Aura collection, and the designer is a “well known” Italian designer. Currently there are two versions of the African Blackwood phone, one with pink gold highlights named the Gresso Blackwood Gold Edition, and one made entirely of African Blackwood. In addition to the two African Blackwood phones Gresso also make a phone made entirely of pink gold named the Gresso Gold phone. Initially, the phones will be on sale only in Russia.

5 megapixel camera phone with Auto focus and Xenon flash Tri-Band HSDPA phone for high-speed picture and video blogging Advanced digital camera features - BestPic™, Photo fix and PictBridge Beautiful images - The 5 megapixel camera with auto focus and Xenon flash produces true digital camera results. Even if you are not an expert photographer, the K850 does everything to help you get the best possible shots on your phone. Photo fix automatically improves light balance in one click to make your picture as good as it can get. When taking a picture of a moving object, for example at a sports event, you can select BestPic™ and take nine pictures in one burst. Then simply choose the best and delete the rest.

Beautifully simple - Increased functionality does not mean increased complexity. When in camera mode the K850’s next generation camera menu makes it intuitive to scroll between functions like shoot mode and picture size. The lens cover retracts automatically with one press of the camera button and a new mode selector lets you switch quickly between camera, video and picture viewing modes. The regular phone keyboard also has a dual purpose; switch to camera mode and illuminated icons indicate which keys act as short-cuts for the digital Zoom and other functions.

Easy to access - Beyond the camera, the K850 is a capable multimedia phone. The new media browser puts all of your stored media, whether photos, video, music or podcasts, in one place offering you a unique Sony Ericsson media experience. Scroll, sort and access your media from a single point in the menu. The K850 Cyber-shot™ phone also allows you to carry out an intelligent search to see photos by the month they were taken, view thumbnail images or scroll through in full-picture mode. With the new crystal display, the K850 offers optimal clarity from any viewing angle.

Easy to share - Once you have taken your picture it is easy to share the memory. If showing a photo on the K850’s large 2.2″ crystal bright display, the innovative auto rotate feature will display it in the correct aspect - portrait or landscape - irrespective of the orientation it was taken in. Picture blogging and video blogging allow you to upload your shots and footage at HSDPA speeds to your own blogsite.

Easy to pair - Given the premium look of the K850 Cyber-shot™ phone, you will want to match it with an accessory that looks just as good. Announced today as an optional accessory, the Bluetooth™ Headset IV840 fits discretely and securely into your ear. This high-performance headset can leave you handsfree for up to 9 hours of talking. It can pair automatically with the K850 for easy set-up, whilst digital noise cancellation provides for optimum sound quality. So, like the K850, the IV840 does not compromise performance or ease of use.

Sony Ericsson K770i

It has a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus, 1.9-inch 262,144 color TFT display with 240 x 320 pixels, FM radio, Memory Stick Micro (M2) slot (256MB memory card supported), Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and support for video calling. Sony Ericsson K770 is a GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 and UMTS 2100 phone, it will be available in Truffle Brown in selected markets from autumn 2007
Sony Ericsson have been doing very well in sales recently - last Christmas they hit the number one spot in some European markets, ahead of Nokia. The reason for this was their strong line-up of Walkman and Cyber-shot handsets - and the Sony Ericsson K770i is the latest in this long line of phones, due to hit the market this autumn. The Sony Ericsson K770i is a lightweight 3G phone, coming in at 95 grams and just 14.5mm thick. There’s a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and autofocus, plus a 1.9″ 240×320 pixel display.Because it’s a Cyber-shot branded phone, the K770i comes with more than just a camera. There’s a built-in “photo fix” application for helping to adjust those pictures that just didn’t quite come out correctly. Plus the K770i has stereo Bluetooth, FM radio, Memory Stick Micro expandable memory (256Mb included in the box), a multimedia player, an email client, web browser and RSS reader. If you’re familiar with previous Cyber-shot branded phones, then you’ll know what to expect.

Sony Ericsson are quoting an astonishing 10 hours talktime when used on GSM, but this drops down to 2.5 hours when used on a 3G network. Standby time in either mode is a maximum of 16 days which is impressive.

t appears to be a good phone, but apart from the slightly peculiar 1970s style brown colour there’s very little that makes the K770i stand out from the increasingly crowded range of Sony Ericsson phones. There are a lot.. really a lot of Cyber-shot and Walkman phones in the range and Sony Ericsson are in danger of stretching the brand too far. Yes, a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash is pretty good, but the K810i and K850i are much better imaging phones and are far more worthy of the “Cyber-shot” branding.[Source:mobilegazette]

Sony Ericsson W580i

Maybe your PR peeps aren’t on the ball, guys, but seriously — stop trying to confuse us by announcing products that have been out for weeks. Sony Ericsson has, for some reason, (re)announced the W580i today following an original announcement way back in March and launches on Rogers and AT&T in August. Features are the same as they were the first time around: quadband GSM plus EDGE, Shake Control, 2 megapixel camera, A2DP, integrated FM radio, and availability in black, gray, and white. Look, if you don’t have anything new to tell us about, that’s cool! Just chill out until you do, k?[Source:engadgetmobile]

Sony Ericsson W580i is a multi media phone comes with a 2.0-inch QVGA screen, 2.0-megapixel camera, M2 card slot (512MB included), EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0, USB connectivity, built-in FM tuner, and “music illumination” effects.

Sony Ericsson W960i

The Sony Ericsson W960i is a “Walkman” version of the Sony Ericsson P1i 3G smartphone, and it can be considered to be a straight upgrade to the existing W950i.Two major improvements with the W960i over the previous model are the inclusion of a 3.2 megapixel camera and WiFi support - the lack of a camera on the older model was an oddity due to the fact that it too was based on another Sony Ericsson smartphone, this time the M600i. One thing to notice about the W960i is the unusually uncluttered design - this is because the W960i uses a large 2.6″ 240×320 pixel resolution touchscreen plus a jog dial. The W960i’s underlying operating system is Symbian with the UIQ interface on top, which means that there are a wide variety of applications available, possibly also including corporate push email solutions. This makes the W960i an unusually powerful member of the Walkman family. There are a couple of major differences between the W960i and the P1i - the most obvious one is that this has a conventional numeric keypad rather than the expanded version on the P1i. Another major change is that the W960i comes with a whopping 8GB of memory, but this isn’t expandable - the W960i doesn’t support any type of memory card expansion.

Although 8GB is plenty, many people like to be able to transfer data (especially pictures) to another machine using a memory card rather than a cable, so some people might find that annoying. The 3.2 megapixel camera comes with autofocus and appears to have a built-in flash and there’s a secondary camera for video calling.Of course, this is a Walkman phone and these latest additions to the Sony Ericsson range come with an enhanced multimedia management suite including access to the PlayNow download service. The music capabilities of Sony Ericsson’s Walkman phones have always been well regarded, and the W960i promises to be even more impressive. Multimedia support includes MP3, AAC and eAAC+ audio plus a variety of video formats.

Other features include stereo Bluetooth, a built-in FM radio, web browser, email client and RSS reader. On top of that there are document viewers and editors, personal information management functions, email synchronisation, handwriting recognition and a whole host of other goodies that mean that the W960i should be equally useful for business users- (we can see that this will be a rival to the popular BlackBerry Pearl in this respect. It is an unusually elegant looking device, available in one colour only (Vinyl Black). Despite the wide range of features, the W960i weighs a reasonable 119 grams and measures 109 x 55 x 16mm. Sony Ericsson anticipate that the W960i should be available in Q2 2007.

Sony Ericsson W880i

Pictures of a new phone, which is probably going to be the successor of Sony Ericsson’s W880i, has just surfaced. The phone, to be named as the Sony Ericsson W890i Walkman features a 3.2 megapixel camera with a GPRS, UMTS and bluetooth connectivity. In addition, it has an FM Radio and is bundled with a 1GB memory stick micro M2 included.

The pictures that have surfaced looked real enough and does not look as if its a hoax. However, these details are not verified as of the moment so we’ll just have to wait and see.
